UNISON's membership is made up of individuals from all walks of life and all parts of the world. Every one of them is entitled to be treated with fairness, dignity, and respect.
Challenging discrimination and winning equality is at the heart of UNISON's policies. Because we recognise that equality is an inseparable part of all trade union issues, we actively campaign for equality in the workplace and in the wider world.
A MESSAGE FROM OUR EQUALITIES OFFICER
.
Equalities is a priority for UNISON and, as Equalities Officer, I am keen to hear the views of members from all backgrounds to ensure that we, as a union, are meeting the needs of all our members.
UNISON has the facility for members to join or form a ‘self-organised group’ (SOG) and there are regional and national meetings of these groups. Currently, in Barnsley branch, there are no active groups, although some members do participate in the regional and/or national committees.
I would like to see Barnsley branch have active SOGS to enrich the branch, as a whole and to ensure that the needs and views of minority groups are kept alive on our branch meeting agenda. Participating in a SOG could be the limit of a member’s involvement; there would be no obligation for a member of a SOG to be involved in other aspects of branch activity.
If you are interested in a women’s group, a disabled members’ group, a black members’ group or an LGBT group or if you have any issues relating to equalities that you would like to me to deal with, please contact me at the UNISON branch office.
